Edward Chen (N.D. Ca.)

Confirmed May 10, 2011

A wide range of groups, individuals, Editorial boards and commentators have urged prompt Senate action on President Obama’s nominations to fill judicial vacancies; those specifically supporting Magistrate Judge Edward Chen’s federal district court nomination include bar associations, former judges and prosecutors, law enforcement organizations, and community organizations.

On March 17, 2011, the Senate Judiciary Committee voted 10-8 in favor of Judge Chen's nomination.  While former Judiciary Committee Ranking member Jeff Sessions (R-AL) voted No, he supported a Floor vote, stating: “I’m of the view that if he’s moved out of committee again he should get a vote at some point as we go forward."

On May 10, 2011, 643 days after he was first nominated, the Senate confirmed Edward Chen’s nomination to be U.S. District Judge for the Northern District of California on a Roll Call vote of 56-42.
